Reading has become an essential part of my life, fueling my curiosity, inspiring my FIRE journey, and providing a much-needed escape. But like many, I struggled to develop a consistent reading habit—until I discovered some simple yet powerful strategies.
My turning point was finishing Atomic Habits, which taught me how small, incremental changes can lead to lasting habits. Inspired, I decided to apply these principles to my reading routine. Today, I read over 2 books a month, having completed more than 30 books in just 2.5 years. If I can do it, so can you!
In this post, I’ll share the practical steps and mindset shifts that helped me build a sustainable reading habit.
1. Start Small with Tiny Goals
The biggest breakthrough for me was setting very manageable goals. I began by committing to just one page a day. It sounds trivial, but that one page was enough to get me started—no pressure, no overwhelm.
Why it works: Small goals reduce resistance and make starting effortless. Once I got into the flow, I naturally read more.
Personal Tip:
Initially, I aimed to finish a book in 2-3 months. Now, I comfortably read about two books a month because I consistently build on that small habit.

2. Make Reading a Daily Ritual
Integrate reading into your daily routine. For me, it’s right after my evening workout or before bed. Find a time that suits your schedule and stick to it.
Tip: Consistency beats intensity. Even 10 minutes daily is enough to build momentum.
Personal Tip:
I used to skip reading on busy days, but now I see it as a non-negotiable part of my day, like brushing my teeth.
3. Create a Comfortable Reading Environment
A cozy, inviting space makes all the difference. Whether it’s a comfy chair, a corner by the window, or a hammock outside, make it your dedicated reading spot.
Tip: Comfort encourages longer, more enjoyable sessions.
Personal Tip:
I set up a small nook with soft cushions and warm lighting, which makes me look forward to reading every day.

4. Limit Distractions and Focus Fully
Turn off notifications, silence your phone, and create a distraction-free zone. Deep focus makes reading more immersive and pleasurable.
Tip: Use features like “Do Not Disturb” mode or airplane mode during your reading time.
Personal Tip:
I leave my phone in another room when I read, so I’m not tempted to check notifications.
5. Leverage Technology to Your Advantage
E-books and audiobooks are game-changers. They allow you to read or listen on the go—during commutes, workouts, or chores.
Tip: Use apps like Kindle, Audible, or Libby to access a vast library anytime.
Personal Tip:
I listen to audiobooks during my walks or while doing household chores, which helps me finish more books.

6. Track Your Progress and Celebrate Small Wins
Keep a reading journal or use apps to log your books and pages. Seeing your progress reinforces your habit.
Tip: Celebrate milestones—like finishing your first book or reaching 10 books.
Personal Tip:
I keep a digital list of all the books I’ve read, which motivates me to keep going.
7. Join a Community or Reading Challenge
Sharing your progress with others adds accountability and fun. Join local book clubs, online forums, or social media groups.
Tip: Participate in reading challenges to stay motivated and discover new genres.
Personal Tip:
Engaging with fellow readers on Goodreads has introduced me to books I wouldn’t have picked myself. I have also subscribed to YouTube channels like SeeKen and Great Ideas Great Life. They give me exposure to popular books in the personal development space.
8. Choose Books That Excite You
Don’t force yourself to read books that don’t interest you. Pick topics and genres you genuinely enjoy.
Tip: Your curiosity is your best guide.
Personal Tip:
I gravitate toward books on finance, travel, and personal growth—topics that align with my passions.

9. Be Patient and Kind to Yourself
Building a habit takes time. Some days will be better than others. If you miss a day, don’t get discouraged—just pick up where you left off.
Tip: Focus on progress, not perfection.
Personal Tip:
I used to get frustrated if I skipped a day, but now I see setbacks as part of the journey.
Conclusion:
Building a lasting reading habit is a gradual process. Starting with tiny, manageable goals and making reading a cherished part of your daily life can transform your relationship with books. Remember, the key is consistency and enjoyment—so pick what excites you, create a cozy space, and celebrate every page turned.
Happy reading!
